COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 14 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) took two from the Union College softball team in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Blue Raiders won game one 8-0 in six innings, then held on for a 4-2 victory in the second game.
With the losses, UC fell to 5-3 overall, while Lindsey Wilson improved to 11-2 with the victories.
In the first game, Union couldn't get anything going offensively on Lindsey Wilson starter Jordan Hood, as they were shutout in an eight-run loss in six innings.
After the game was scoreless in the first two and a half innings, Lindsey Wilson got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third off UC starter Abby Sears (London, Ky.). The Lady Raiders then put the game away in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring four runs in the fifth, and a lone run in the sixth to end the ballgame.
In the loss, Cameron Campbell (Maryville, Tenn.), Madison McKinney (Elizabethtown, Tenn.), and Ashley Wojnowski (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) all had hits. In the circle, Sears (3-1) took her first loss of the season after going five innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits, with four strikeouts. Hood was the victor (3-2) for Lindsey Wilson, hurling five shutout innings, giving up just two hits, while striking out six.
In game two, LWC jumped out to a quick lead, and never relinquished it, despite the Lady Bulldogs making a few runs late in the contest.
Union starter Katie Perkins (Owensboro, Ky.) struggled in the first inning for the second straight game, giving up three runs on three hits in the top frame, as Lindsey Wilson raced out to a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, scoring twice to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead down to 3-2. In the innings. Woods got things started with a lead-off single, then Gina Loflin hit a double to left that advanced Woods to third. Next up was Sears, who smacked an RBI single, scoring Woods from third.
Campbell then came up and knocked home Loflin on an RBI, sacrifice fly to left. The Lady Bulldogs, however, stranded two on base in the inning after Lindsey Wilson switched pitchers, as LWC kept the one-run lead.
In the bottom half of the fourth, LWC extending the lead out to two runs on a Jordan Gilland home run. This tuned out to be the final run of the ballgame, but Union did not go out quietly. In the sixth, Loflin lead off with a single, then Sears doubled to give the Lady Bulldogs runners on second and third with no outs. LWC, however, got out of the jam after back-to-back strikeouts, then forced a line out to end the inning.
Union's last chance came in the seventh, where once again the lead-off hitter got on base, as Wojnowski lead off with a pinch-hit single. After an out, Amy Barnett (Bowling Green, Ky.) then pinch hit, and was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with one out. But, once again, Lindsey Wilson wiggled out of the jam, as they forced a Woods pop out, then a Loflin ground out to end the game.
Overall, Loflin led Union at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Sears went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Perkins (2-1) took the loss, going six innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits, while striking out four. Cara Law (5-0) was the victor for Lindsey Wilson, while Lauren Sibert earned her first save of the year in the win.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Friday when they take on Grace (Ind.) in a doubleheader. The contests, which will be played off-campus at Knox County High School, begin at 4 p.m.
