HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - The Knott Central Patriots broke through last season with four wins, their highest win total since 1996, and this season they have one goal in mind. "To show them that we can prove them wrong," says senior lineman Tyler Parks. "That four wins was good but we want to show them that we can do more. That we're stronger, faster, smarter, and that we're more as a team than in the past."
In order for the Patriots to improve on last year's win total they know defensive improvement is a must. "We have to definitely improve our defense and that's what we've really focused on this early part of the season," says second-year head coach Steve Hollon.
"Most of the teams we play they're all passing. They don't run like we do," adds senior Taylor Thornsberry, "so we need to get better at our corners and our safeties and our linebackers at rushing."
A balanced attack on the offensive side of the ball will also be key. "We've been working with the quarterback," says senior wide receiver/defensive back Devin Everage. "We got another receiver. We've just been working in practice non-stop with it."
"Our play makers from last year, they taught us a lot," adds senior Dylan johnson, "and we still got a lot of playing time last year, so it's just going to help us with this season."
But the one message Hollon wants his players to remember? "You can look yourself in the mirror and say, 'I did my best.' That's all anybody can ask for."
The Patriots are hoping their best will result in the program's first winning season in nearly two decades.
