Patriot basketball moves to 12-0 defeating Carver College and Life University

The NAIA #2 ranked University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Basketball team looked to continue its perfect season this week as they traveled to Georgia to take on Carver College and Life University on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. The Patriots would take a 20 point victory away from Carver on Wednesday and sneak away with a 4 point win over Life on Thursday to stay unbeaten on the year.

On Wednesday, the Patriots traveled to Atlanta, GA to take on Carver College. Carver did attempt to keep the game close, but the solid shooting of the Patriots kept them in front for a large majority of the game as they defeated Carver 92-72. Senior Benito Santiago, Jr. (Coamo, Puerto Rico) led the Patriots with 24 points on the night. Antonio Bumpus (Columbus, OH) and Ernie McCoy (Columbus, OH) both also pitched in 21 points each in the victory.

On Thursday, UC stuck around in Marietta, GA as they took on #18 Life University in a battle between two NAIA Top 25 teams. The Patriots had a 16 point lead at one point in the 1st half but a 7-0 run by the Eagles made it a 38-29 game at halftime. Solid shooting from the free throw line in the 2nd half was a big key to the Patriots’ 81-77 victory. Bumpus had another stellar game with 28 points and 5 rebounds as he went 15-18 from the free throw line. Steve Goins (Chicago, IL) was a huge factor in the game as he went 6-7 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line totaling 18 points and 13 rebounds.

The Patriots now move to 12-0 on the season for the first time since the 03-04 season where they started 15-0. UC will travel to New Albany, IN on December 14th as they take on Indiana University-Southeast. Tipoff is set for 7:00 pm.
