The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s basketball team traveled to Frankfort, Kentucky on Wednesday in preparation for Mid-South Conference (MSC) tournament play. Attending the MSC banquet on Wednesday evening, the Patriot ladies received many individual awards recognizing the hard work, talent, and effort put forth all year.
Freshman Ashley Mullins (Totz, KY) took home one of the top awards of the evening, receiving Freshman of the Year for the Mid-South Conference. Mullins averaged 9.8 points per game along with 5.3 rebounds as she not only played key minutes for the Patriots, but started in many of the games.
Senior Dace Bicane (Riga, Latvia) was named to First Team All-Conference after leading the Patriots in scoring and rebounding throughout the season. Averaging 12.4 points per game and 8 rebounds, Bicane also totaled 43 steals on the season, a team-high, making her a constant threat on both ends of the floor.
The Patriot ladies were also strongly represented in the academic field this season, with four student-athletes being named to the MSC Academic All-Conference team. Thali Rodriguez (Malmo, Sweden), Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, KY), Julie Haye (Dixon, IL) and Jackie Alexander (Brodhead, KY) all maintained over a 3.25 grade point average throughout the year, demonstrating the effort the Patriot ladies put forth not only on the court but in the classroom as well.
The Patriot ladies will take on the Campbellsville Lady Tigers on Thursday evening, in first-round action of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Tip-off is set for 8 pm.
