WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Basketball team began their season with a tough battle on the road Saturday night against the NAIA #21 ranked Cougars of Columbia College. With tough nosed team defense along with clutch free-throw shooting in the final minutes, the Patriot ladies held on for the season-opening victory 70-65. Although the final minutes were a battle of “who wanted it more”, the Patriots led most of the game with the largest lead of 15 points coming early in the second half.
The Patriots dominated the offensive and defensive glass throughout the game, out-rebounding the Cougars 55 to 40. With 9 steals along with 5 blocks, the Patriots’ team defense was able to hold the Cougar offense to only 32% shooting from the field as well as forcing them to commit 19 turnovers.
While defense was what propelled the ladies to victory, offensively the Patriots played together with smart ball movement and patience. Dishing out 15 assists as a team, the Patriots unselfish play proved to be too much for the Cougars defense.
Junior Jackie Alexander (Brodhead, KY) led the offensive attack with an overall impressive performance, scoring 16 points while handing out 3 assists to go along with 6 rebounds. Freshman Ashley Mullins (Totz, KY) put together an exciting performance herself scoring 14 points along with 2 blocks in her career debut with the Patriots. Junior transfer Jill Herman (Powell, TN) contributed 9 points and 4 assists of her own, while senior Vernisha Moss (Nassau, Bahamas) chipped in with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The NAIA #18 ranked Patriots look to further their success early this season as they face Fisk University on their home court Monday, November 5th. Tip-off is set for 6 PM.
