WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- This past weekend, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) track and field team competed in the Cedarville Collegiate Indoor Invite in Cedarville, OH.
The Patriots were prepared and provided a challenge for the other teams they faced. The women's team placed 4th of 11 teams with 60 points while the men's team placed 3rd of 10 teams with 82 points.
On the women's side of the competition in the running events senior
Darcy Mascotti (Bellbrook, OH) competed in the women’s one mile run. Mascotti won the event in 5:05.40 which was not only good enough to hit “A” standard for nationals, but now also holds the meet record. Junior Danielle Hoop (Owenton, KY) competed in the women's 3,000 meter run and also won her event in 10:06.27. Hoop’s time set a new school record for the event. Both Mascotti and Hoop then competed in the 4x400 meter relay with freshman Ayanna Pringle (Miamisburg, OH) and junior Aneta Elliot (Acworth, GA). The ladies finished third in the relay with a time of 4:20.51. Pringle also ran the 400 meter dash finishing 7th with a time of 65.43.
In the 5,000 meter run, junior Shelby Gibbons (Hamersville, OH) placed 3rd with a time of 19:55.19 right behind her teammate Meg MaGaha (Beavercreek, OH) who was the runner-up in the event with a time of 19:54.23. In the women's 55 meter hurdles, Patriot Shawnee Holbrook (Rockholds, KY) took 6th place in the finals with an impressive time of 9.67 seconds.
In the field events for the women, specifically on the throws side, junior Taylor Mayes (Knoxville, TN) finished 9th in the women's shot put with a distance of 10.46 meters. Samantha Proffitt (London, KY) competed in the women’s high jump where she sprung a distance of 1.46 meters earning herself a 3rd place finish.
Participating for the men's side of the competition in the running events, sophomore Sam Meredith (Louisville, KY) competed in the men’s one mile and 5,000 meter run. Meredith ran the mile in 4:26.12 capturing the runner-up finish of the 21 man race, and then later that night competed in the 5K where he finished 7th with a time of 16:07.11. Meredith was also a member of the 4x400 meter “C” team along with Eric Phillips (New Castle, KY), Raymond Bettman-Hodge (Louisville, KY), and Donnie Whyte (Miamisburg, OH). This “C” team placed 6th in the event with a time of 3:48.05. The Cumberland Patriots also had two other relay teams in the relay. Cumberlands “B” team consisting of Keon Jones (Merrilville, IN), Donnie Gay (Garfield, GA), Aaron Harrison (Courtland, OH), and Cory Heslin (Louisville, KY) placed 5th with a time of 3:46.84. And lastly Cumberlands “A” team who had Steven Johnson (Atlanta, GA), Devin Gray (Carrollton, KY), Adam Colebrook (Freeport, Bahamas), and Erik Willis (Richmond, IN) were the runner-ups of the event running 3:31.10.
Gay competed earlier that day in the 55 meter and 200 meter dash.
Gay placed 5th in the 55 with a fast time of 6.64 seconds, and 6th in the 200 with a time of 23.59 seconds. Johnson also competed in the 55m earning a 7th place finish in 6.70 seconds. Willis also competed in the open 400 meter dash where he was the runner-up of the 24 man event running a time of 51.94 seconds.
In the men's weight throw, winning the event was Christian Brislenn throwing 13.97 meters. Cameron Smoak (Williamsburg, KY) and Shane Turnipseed (Denver, IN) also threw in this event placing 5th and 7th with throws of 11.90 meters and 11.01 meters respectively. Each of these men competed in the shot put also. Brislenn placing 7th throwing 12.26 meters, Turnipseed placing 6th with a 12.32 meter throw, and Smoak placing 3rd with a throw of 13.54 meters.
During the field events, Dallas Dafoor (Gainesville, GA) placed 4th in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.16 meters. AJ Dickson (Milwaukee, OR) competed in the men's triple jump placing 2nd jumping 13.11 meters.
One lone Patriot competed in the men’s 3,000 meter race walk. Freshman Sam Beal (Beavercreek, OH) competed in the last event of the evening where he earned himself a 7th place finish with a time of 14:39.58. Beal’s time was fast enough to hit the “B” standard for the NAIA Indoor Track National Championships in March.
The Patriots will travel to Greencastle, IN to compete in the DePauw Classic on February 14th. Select Patriots will also travel to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on February 15th.
