Patriot baseball signs Kentucky trio for 2012-13 season

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - University of the Cumberlands (UC) Baseball Coach Brad Shelton announces the signing of three outstanding Kentucky High School baseball players. Hunter Best, Landon Case, and Stone Osborne are teammates on the 2012 18U World Series Champion Bluegrass Stars team. All three come from different areas of the state, but play summer baseball for the Stars based out of Lexington, Ky.

Hunter Best is a graduate of Russell County High School. In his high school career, the team won 4 district championships, 1 regional title, 1 regional runner-up, 2 semi-final appearances, and won a total of 103 games. He became the all-time leading hitter in Laker history with a .519 average and set the single season hits record with 68. During his sophomore year, Best hit safely in 36 out of 39 games. He was named to the Kentucky High School Coaches Association sophomore showcase. As a junior and senior, Hunter was named to the East/West All-Stars and was named Honorable Mention All-State. As a senior, he hit .420 with 50 hits, 21 stolen bases and 54 runs scored. Best was also 4-1 on the mound with 2 saves. Coach Shelton said about Best, "Hunter can really hit. He is a left-handed hitter that understands how to use the whole field and he is also able to utilize his speed."

Stone Osborne is a graduate of Owen County High School. As a senior, Stone hit .500 with 9 homeruns and 40 RBI while tallying 47 hits on the season. He also hit 12 doubles and 6 triples while stealing 21 bases and posting a .634 on-base percentage with an impressive slugging percentage of 1.043. Osborne drew 29 walks while only striking out 12 times the entire season. On the mound, he posted a 6-2 record with a 2.57 ERA while striking out 56 hitters in 46 1/3 innings. As a junior and senior, Stone was named to the East/West All-Stars and was named Honorable Mention All-State. He was also a standout basketball player at Owen County. Stone has the ability to play infield, outfield and pitch. Coach Shelton commented, "Stone has great potential. He already has power. I am excited to see him develop into an outstanding collegiate hitter. He has good speed and is strong, but I believe he has a very high ceiling and will continue to improve now that he will concentrate on baseball."

Landon Case is a graduate of Anderson County High School. In 2010 as a sophomore, he was named to the Kentucky High School Coaches Association sophomore showcase. During that season, Case hit .350 with 8 doubles. As a junior, Landon hit for a .338 average while posting an 8-3 record on the mound. He pitched a school record 8 complete games on his way to earning the team’s MVP award. During his summer season as a junior, he hit .436 with 12 doubles, and 33 RBI for the Bluegrass Stars. As a senior, Case posted a .305 average with 10 doubles and a 6-4 pitching record. He also tallied 98 strikeouts and a 1.23 ERA and set the school record for strikeouts in a game with 14. Case was named East/West All-Star in 2011 and was named to the All 8th Region Team in 2011 and 2012. Coach Shelton added, "Landon had a great high school career at Anderson County. He is another quality athlete in this class that has a chance to really develop into a good player at our level. He's a very good defensive infielder and a strike thrower on the mound."

Shelton commented, “These three guys are talented players. They had successful high school careers and have all played at a high level in summer ball. We are excited that they are joining our program and I believe they have a chance to be great players for us down the road.”
