WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football program has started off as strong as ever with a 3-0 record thus far in the 2013 season. The Patriots are going into this week looking to get some much deserved rest during the bye week. The first edition of the 2013 NAIA Football Top 25 poll was released on Monday and the Patriots have made a jump that many think is well deserved.
The Patriots jumped 5 spots this week to #3 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll, officials announced on Monday. This is the highest ranking ever in UC history. The Patriots, who lead the NAIA in total rushing offense, have compiled over 1000 rushing yards (1119) in the first three games of the season with victories over preseason No. 21 Belhaven, No. 25 Cumberland University, and unranked Union College.
Cumberlands, which has defeated its opponents by an average of 28.6 points, is ranked among the top five teams for the first time since Oct. 31, 2005. That year, the Patriots earned a #5 ranking after defeating UVA-Wise 40-17 to move to 8-1 on the season and 3-0 in MSC East play.
Other Mid-South Conference teams in the NAIA Top 25 poll this week include Georgetown College (#6), Faulkner University (#23), Lindsey Wilson College (#24), and the University of Pikeville (#25).
Head Coach John Bland commented, “It is better to be moving up than moving down. Our goal is still to climb two more notches. It is exciting to see the improvement each week.”
The Patriots will carry their #3 ranking into a bye week this week as they prepare for a rare Thursday night showdown on September 26th at #25 University of Pikeville. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
