WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Golf team had a tough week during Mid-South Conference (MSC) competition, finishing second overall at the MSC Championships in Bardstown, KY. The No. 17 ranked Patriots shot an overall team score of 899 over three days of play, 19 shots back of the MSC Champion Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College who shot an 880 on the tournament.
Although as a team the Patriots didn’t finish how they would have hoped, individually there was much success. Freshman Michal Pospisil (Unhost-Nouzov, Czech Republic) had a stellar week yet again as he finished in first place overall after winning in a playoff against Frank Medale of Lindsey Wilson College. Pospisil shot a 217 (+1) over the tournament, clinching an automatic spot to the NAIA National Championships in May. The win was Michal’s 3rd of the spring semester and 4th win overall on the year. Teammate Christoffer Eriksson (Nykoping, Sweden) finished 10th overall as an individual after shooting a 225 (+9) on the tournament while Hugo Alvarez Asorey (Oviedo, Spain) placed T-11th with a score of 227 (+11). Viktor Madsen (Akersburga, Sweden) and Patrick Goodhue (Ottawa, Canada) made the Top 20 placing T-11th and T-15th respectively with scores of 227 and 231. Stephen Marbach (Naperville, IL) also competed in the event, shooting a 238 and finishing tied for 26th.
Following the tournament, conference officials handed out All-Conference honors. The two All-Conference teams are based on the three Mid-South sponsored tournaments throughout the year with each individual using his top five scores in the seven rounds. Patriots making the elite list included Pospisil, Madsen, and Asorey as first team selections. Pospisil also was named not only Freshman of the Year in the MSC but also the Player of the Year.
Head Coach Chris Kraftick commented, “Obviously this was not the week we were hoping for. We have played some good golf as of late, but couldn’t get it going this week. This group has been through a lot this semester and I’m proud of how hard they worked and how well they played. I’m excited Michal will represent us at Nationals. He’s had a tremendous year and I’m sure he’ll continue his good play in Florida.”
Pospisil will participate in the NAIA National Championships in Daytona Beach, FL at LPGA International from May 13th-16th.
