Patriot ladies sweep opponents at Union College Classic

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Basketball team travelled down the road to Union College this past weekend to participate in the Union College Classic before heading into the holiday season.

Facing two aggressive teams, the Patriots were able to ban together and come away with two wins.

Defeating Montreat College on Friday night 73-56 and Union College 67-54 on Saturday afternoon, the Patriots not only moved their overall record to 4-3 on the season, but helped Head Coach Melissa Irvin earn her 350th career win.

Things started off slow for the Patriot ladies on Friday against Montreat College, with Cumberlands a little rusty in the open floor from their two-week spell without a game.

However with strong team rebounding and second-chance points, the Patriots were able to pull away with a 73-56 victory. Cumberlands demonstrated yet another balanced attack on the offensive end, with 5 Patriot ladies reaching double-digit scoring.

Julie Haye (Polo, IL) led the way with 15 points and 5 rebounds, while Brooke Forsythe (Brunswick, OH) and Jackie Alexander (Brodhead, KY) added 13 points apiece with Forsythe chipping in 9 rebounds and Alexander 6 of her own. Jill Herman (Powell, TN) and Lynnae Lampkins (Fort Washington, MD) produced in the backcourt for the Patriots, scoring 10 points each and combining for 10 assists between the two.

On Saturday afternoon, the Patriots faced the Bulldogs of Union College, in their first meeting since the 2006-07 season. Although the Patriots struggled the majority of the game from behind the three-point line, their dominating play in the post boosted them past the Bulldogs 67-54, earning Coach Irvin her 350th career win.

Out-rebounding the Bulldogs 47-32, the Patriots were led once again by the aggressive post play of Haye, who scored a career high 19 points while grabbing 7 rebounds as well in over 29 minutes of play.

Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, KY) was able to get things going this game from the outside, scoring 13 points of her own, while Alexander had yet another successful afternoon, posting 12 points and 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

The Patriots will look to keep their strong play alive as they host Kent State University at Tuscarawas on Thursday, December 19th at 12 pm.
