WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriot softball team entered a full week of play after a successful Spring Break spent in Myrtle Beach, S.C. UC earned 4 wins during the break, but were unable to come away with a win in their 5 games this week, dropping 4 games in the Mid-South Conference (MSC).
After an exciting week of play the week prior, UC started the week on the road at Lindsey Wilson College (LWC). The Patriots unfortunately came away with two losses against the nationally ranked Blue Raiders. Game one ended in a final score of 11-3 while UC fell in game two by a score of 7-1. UC fell behind early in game one 6-0, but answered back with 3 runs in the 4th inning, but 5 runs in the bottom of the inning would put the game away for the Patriots. Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN) went 1-2 in game one with 3 RBIs and a run scored. In game two, the Patriots would hold on to a 1-0 lead heading into the 4th inning, but 7 unanswered runs by LWC would seal UC’s fate. Catcher Brittny Lovelace (Middletown, OH) went 2-4 in the game with the lone RBI.
The Patriots struggled at home on Thursday as they fought against the Tennessee Wesleyan College (TWC) Bulldogs in a single game. TWC would jump out to a 9-0 lead after 3 innings of play. The Patriots fought back in the 5th inning when freshman Chesney Moss (Oak Ridge, TN) got the inning started with a base hit, followed up by sophomore Kayla Shelton (Barbourville, KY) who stepped up to knock in Moss with her second homerun of the season. However, the Patriots found themselves with another loss on their record with a final score of 12-2.
The Patriots would play again on Saturday in a double header against Shawnee State University. UC kept the game close as they trailed 2-1 after 4 innings of play in game one. The Bears would add 7 more runs in the final 3 innings to take a 9-2 victory over UC. Benson would go 2-2 in the game with an RBI. The 2nd game of the doubleheader would go by quietly for UC as they were only able to come away with 2 hits in the game as they fell to the Bears by a score of 5-0. Pitcher Ashleigh Hopf (Centerville, OH) had a solid start for UC going 6 innings allowing 7 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.
The Patriots now sit with an overall record of 6-16 and 1-9 in Mid-South Conference (MSC) play. UC will step up to the plate again on Tuesday, March 26th as they host Cumberland University. First game is scheduled to start at 2 pm.
