WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Basketball team is excited and ready to begin the 2012-2013 season, looking not only to repeat as Mid-South Conference (MSC) Champions but to reach their ultimate goal: an NAIA National Championship. With the slogan “Unfinished Business” as the foundation and motivation for the season, the Patriot ladies have a lot of work to do “at the office” as the MSC Preseason Coaches’ Poll has picked UC fourth in the conference to kick off the season.
Once again, the Shawnee State University Bears are the favored team to win the MSC Championship for the 2012-2013 season according to the MSC Preseason Coaches’ Poll released on Sunday by the Conference. The University of the Cumberlands is tied to finish fourth with Lindsey Wilson College, behind Shawnee State University, Georgetown College, and Campbellsville University.
Shawnee State University was picked as the heavy favorites, receiving 96 voting points, as well as 8 of the 11 first-place votes. Finishing second behind Shawnee State was Georgetown College receiving 84 voting points and 2 first-place votes. Just ahead of the Patriots is Campbellsville University who finished with 80 voting points and one first-place vote.
The Patriots are projected to finish fourth, tied with Lindsey Wilson College with 74 voting points apiece. MSC newcomer Cumberland University received 52 voting points, ranking them as sixth in the balloting. St. Catharine College finished next at seventh place with 51 voting points, followed by University of Rio Grande in eighth with 29 voting points. The remaining teams in the preseason poll include: University of Pikeville (27 voting points), UVA-Wise (21), and Bluefield College (18).
The poll is voted on by the MSC coaches with each coach not allowed to vote for their own team.
The Patriots had a very successful season last year as they were co-champs of the MSC regular season title as well as the MSC tournament champion. The Patriot ladies also earned a trip to Frankfort for the NAIA National Championships falling short 80-73 to Rogers State University (OK) in overtime during the first round of play.
The Patriot ladies will open their 2012-2013 season at Columbia College on November 1st, 2012. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
