WILLIAMSBURG, Ky (WYMT) - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Golf team provided Patriot fans with an exciting preview of what the 2013-2014 season has in store. With two teams of Patriots entering the 2-day tournament, both squads proved to be full of talent and poise as Cumberlands ‘A’ team captured first place with Cumberlands ‘B’ squad finishing a worthy second. Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that both teams held strong leads over the field during both full days of play.
The Patriots ‘A’ team kicked off the season with a strong first day of action, as the team finished with a total score of 301. Determined to push themselves even harder the next day, the Patriots finished with a total score of 314 for the second day, finishing the tournament with a score of 615 (+31). Defending their 2012 title, the women were led by Liz Stephens (Tockington, Bristol, UK) who finished second individually, shooting a combined score of 150 (+4) over two days of play and earning All-Tournament team honors. Shannon Bishop (Glasgow, KY) finished directly behind Stephens in third place with a total of 153 (+7), also earning All-Tournament team honors. Bri-anne Tokariwski (Winnipeg, Canada) tied for fourth place in the tournament shooting 154 (+8) over both days of play, also earning All-Tournament team honors. Chelsea Branscum (Somerset, KY) and Candice Lindeque (Boksburg, South Africa) rounded out the ‘A’ team finishing 9th and 16th respectively with two day scores of 158 (+12) and 161 (+15).
The Patriots ‘B’ team also had a strong first outing, finishing with a total score of 632 over two days of play (+48), capturing a well-deserved second place finish. They were led by senior Taylor Gillis (Lawrenceburg, KY) who was the Medalist in the tournament shooting a two day total of 147 (+1), including a tournament best round of 73 (E) on day 1. Teammate Sadie Martinez (Hartford, CT) finished with a score of 160 (+14), tying for 13th place with fellow Patriot Rachel Pingleton (Parksville, KY). Annabeth McKay (Amarillo, TX) and Latoshia Davis (Williamsburg, KY) rounded out the team as McKay shot a 165 (+19) over two days while Davis shot a 198 (+52) for the tournament.
Head Coach Chris Kraftick commented, “This team wanted to make a statement right away and did that. It’s the most competitive group of women I’ve been around. The freshmen did a great job and I think the level of competition they see each day in practice makes tournaments easier.”
The Patriot ladies will be back on the links on September 30th as they take part in the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament at the Cherry Blossom Club in Georgetown, KY.
