The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball team continued their overall stellar play during the 2011-2012 season this past week as they continued conference play by hosting the University of Pikeville Lady Bears on Thursday, December 1 and University of Virginia at Wise Lady Cavaliers on Saturday, December 3.
The Patriots were staggered in the first half shooting only 27% from the floor and trailed the Lady Bears by 2 at the break. However, the 2nd half was a much different story for the Patriots as their defense was stifling and the nets were constantly being shook as the Patriots outscored the Bears 48-19 in the 2nd half to come away with a 74-47 victory.
Senior Lauren Wombles (London, KY) posted a double-double as she finished the night with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. Senior Jade Howard (Salyersville, KY) added 16 points, 2 rebounds, and 7 assists in the Lady Patriots winning effort.
The 2nd MSC showdown of the week had the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise coming to Williamsburg. The Patriots started the game strong, but only held a 3 point lead at half over UVA-Wise due to a big 3-pointer at the buzzer. Fortunately, the Patriots defense once again stepped up and were able to hold the Cavaliers to just 29 points in the 2nd half as the Patriots pulled away with an 80-66 win to stay undefeated in MSC play at 3-0.
The Patriots offensive attack was led by forward Vernisha Moss (Nassau, Bahamas) who finished the game with 23 points and 9 rebounds, setting a new season high for herself in scoring. Guard Jade Howard added 19 points, 2 rebounds, and 7 assists to round out the Patriots win.
The win was big in more than one way for the Patriots on Saturday. Senior forward Lauren Wombles ended the game with 22 points and 8 rebounds to go along with her 2 assists, 1 block, and 4 steals. Her 22 points takes her to 1,625 career points surpassing UC’s number two all time scorer, Hope Peace-Akins who had 1622 points to boast. Wombles now is just 391 points away from setting a new all-time scoring mark at UC that is currently held by Soni Smith (1980-1984) with 2,015.
The Patriot ladies will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 8 as they host Trevecca Nazarene University with tip-off set for 6pm. They will also travel next week on December 10th to take on #18 Columbia College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3pm.
