Patriot “Shot Seen ‘Round the World” Earns #4 Play of the Year on ESPN

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Basketball team made national and world news on January 22, 2011 when Stephanie Quattrociocchi (Windsor, Canada) heaved an 86 foot three pointer at the buzzer to end the first half against Campbellsville. The shot gave the Patriots a 7 point lead in the game, but earned UC a spot in many people’s eyes throughout the world.

The play earned the #1 spot in that night’s Top Plays segment on ESPN Sportscenter. Now, the “Shot Seen ‘Round the World” has made news once again as it was voted the #4 Top Play of the Year on ESPN’s Sportscenter.

UC Athletic Director Randy Vernon commented, “We are all excited about Stephanie's shot being voted #4 on the ESPN Top Plays of the Year. It was really an exciting moment at the time it happened and something I have never seen before. The publicity was spectacular and possibly the most coverage of a single event at the University that we have ever had."

The shot was named ESPN’s “Best of the Best” for 8 straight voting days and was continually talked about around the campus, city, state, and country. On February 2nd, Quattrociocchi was interviewed during the live edition of Sportscenter by ESPN’s John Buccigross. The video on YouTube currently has over 210,000 hits and continues to increase each day.

Women’s Basketball Head Coach Melissa Irvin added, “It's a great tribute to Stephanie and the University of the Cumberlands to be included in the 2011 ESPN Top Plays of the Year. She has been an exemplary student athlete and has represented our program well throughout the past year as well as throughout her career. I believe it proves that you can make a big statement at a small school.”

Quattrociocchi said, “I’m absolutely shocked and appreciate all the support from everyone at Cumberlands and home. It’s a dream come true and I’m just glad that I can share it with everyone.”

The Patriots are currently 12-1 in the 2011-2012 season and ranked #14 in the NAIA. They hope to continue their run towards a Mid-South Conference Championship and look to make an impact in the hunt for an NAIA National Title.
