The University of the Cumberlands (UC) softball team completed their regular season play on Sunday, April 22nd. The Patriots went 2-4 on the week as they took on the St. Catherine Patriots, the Union Bulldogs, and the Tigers of Campbellsville.
After regular season play, the Patriot softball team is 10-39 overall and 5-16 in the Mid-South Conference (MSC).
The first double header of the week was played at St. Catherine College (SCC) on Tuesday the 17th; it however, did not go as planned for UC. After sweeping SCC earlier in the season, UC was unable to capitalize on their early season efforts against the Patriots and dropped both games on the road by scores of 5-11 and 4-12. Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN) was big for UC in the doubleheader going a combined 4-6 in the two games with 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in, a walk, 2 doubles, and a home run.
On Friday, the UC Patriots hosted Union College for the first game under the lights this season at Gene Mosley Field. After the Bulldogs swept the Patriots very early in the season, UC was looking for the payback.
In game one on Friday, the Patriots put it to the Bulldogs with a 3-2 victory. Senior hurler Angela Steuer (Miamisburg, OH) allowed only three hits in the game, giving UC’s offense a chance to overtake Union, and they did just that. The Patriots scored early in the game on a two-out clutch hit by senior Ashley Wampler (London, KY) in the bottom of the 1st. Going into the 6th inning, the Patriots held a 2 run lead over the Bulldogs, but an untimely error and a two run home run in the top of the 6th put the two teams back even. The Patriots would not back down and with the combination of some perfectly executed small-ball and a clutch hit by Rachel Akins (London, KY), UC took the lead back at 3-2 and wouldn’t relinquish it. Holding on for one more inning, the Patriots locked down the win.
In game two, the Bulldogs would score first with an earned run in the top of the 2nd. A very long inning in the 3rd would include a lot of action on both sides. Putting the ball in play every at-bat combined with two Patriot errors, the Bulldogs claimed another four runs in the top of the 3rd. UC answered back right to try and take the game from Union. With big hits including doubles by Jessica Speake (Lancaster, KY) and Benson and a two-run homerun by Wampler, the Patriots tied up the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Unfortunately, the Patriots made some untimely errors in the last two innings of the game and the Bulldogs would pull ahead. Game two went down as a 7-5 Patriot loss.
On Sunday, the Patriots took on the Tigers of Campbellsville on the Tigers campus in Campbellsville, KY.
Consistent hitting in game one on Sunday would prove to be the go ahead for the Patriots. Scoring in four out of the seven innings played, UC’s offense kept putting the pressure on. Holding on to the lead throughout the entire game, the Patriots claimed another victory for the week, taking the win from the Tigers at 5-3. Senior pitcher Steuer came up big once again going 2-4 in the ball game with 2 runs batted in. She also threw a complete game in the circle allowing just 3 runs on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1.
Switching up the action, Campbellsville would be the team to be strong on offense in game two of the double header. Scoring a total of nine runs in the first two innings of the game, the Patriots struggled to come back from behind. They did earn a pair of runs in the 4th, but it would not be enough to come back from the early inning damage. The Patriots fell to the Tigers 12-2 in game two.
UC softball will begin post-season play on Wednesday, April 25th as they will participate in the MSC Tournament Play-In game against the University of Pikeville in Danville, KY. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm.
