On Monday, November 12th, the Mid-South Conference (MSC) released the 2013 preseason baseball rankings. In one of the toughest conferences in the nation, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriots were picked to finish in seventh place. UC will be looking to regain their status as one of the elite teams in the country as the move up the MSC standings.
“After last year we have a lot to prove,” said Head Coach Brad Shelton. “We believe we have a team that can contend, but it has to be settled on the field.”
After capturing their first MSC regular season title last season with a 17-4 record, Lindsey Wilson College was picked to finish first with 99 total votes and 9 first place votes.
Georgetown College was picked to finish second with 85 votes (1 first place vote) and Cumberland University followed close behind in third with 83 votes (1 first place vote). Following them was Campbellsville University in fourth with 79 votes, Shawnee State in fifth with 57 votes, St. Catharine College in sixth with 56 votes, and University of the Cumberlands in seventh with 49 votes.
Bluefield College received 33 votes for eighth place followed by UVA-Wise with 29 votes, Rio Grande 25, and University of Pikeville with 10 to round out the conference.
Returning starters for the Patriots include shortstop Jared Martin (Cynthiana, KY), outfielder Charles Hyde (Fort Mitchell, KY), and outfielder Blake DeBacher (Miami, FL). Returning on the mound, Cumberlands has Donovan Feenstra (Calgary, Canada) and Duncan Kaai-Ebert (Kapolei, HI).
The Patriots open the 2013 season at home on Saturday February 2nd against Union College starting at 1:00 pm.
