Patriots Baseball sweep the Rams

On Monday, March 4th the University of the Cumberlands (UC) baseball team hosted the Rams of Ohio Mid-Western for a doubleheader at Doyle Buhl Stadium.

So far on the season the Patriots have had moments of lapses on defense leading to errors that have been costly in late game situations. In game one the same thing happened in the first inning when UC fielders committed 3 errors leading to the Rams getting the 3-0 lead.

The Patriots answered back with 5 runs in the bottom half behind an RBI single from Blake Debacher (Miami, FL), a two RBI single from John Doolittle (Sharpsburg, GA), and a two RBI single from Jake Goodman (Elizabethtown, KY).

Ohio Mid-Western would add another run in the second on an RBI single from Sam Sims to cut the lead to 5-4. However, Cumberlands scored 10 unanswered runs the rest of the way as they pulled away for the 15-4 win.

Getting his first win on the season for UC was Landon Case (Lawrenceburg, KY; 1-0) who pitched 4 innings allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. Keith Prowse (Charlotte, NC) would come on in relief throwing 2 innings giving up 1 hit with 2 strikeouts and Keita Murakami (Wailuku, HI) would pitch the seventh striking out the side. The loss went to the Rams Billy Eller.

In game two the Patriots left no doubt as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they got the 9-1 win.

The Patriots held a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth before ripping off four hits in the inning to score 5 runs and open the game up.

The pitching for Cumberlands was solid as starter Cameron Smith (Louisville, KY; 1-0) threw 5 innings allowing 1 run, 0 earned, on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts in picking up his first win of the season. In relief was Jordan Crus-Del Olmo (Miami, FL) who pitched the final 2 innings allowing 2 hits with 4 strikeouts.

On the day UC was led by Blake Debacher who had 4 hits, 4 runs scored, and 6 RBIs. Claudio Valencia (Yuma, AZ), Jared Martin (Cynthiana, KY), and Charles Hyde (Fort Mitchell, KY) chipped in with 3 hits apiece on the day. John Doolittle and Jake Goodman also had 3 RBIs apiece.

“We did a better job offensively in this doubleheader, especially in our execution,” said Head Coach Brad Shelton. “Our pitching was good, but we still need to improve defensively. We still haven’t played a complete game. This team is a work in progress and we just have to keep improving. We have all the ingredients of a great team. The competition doesn’t get any easier; playing at Rio Grande this week will be a challenge.”

With the wins from Monday, the Patriots move to 7-7 (0-3 MSC) as they head into this week’s action when they travel to Chillicothe, Ohio to take on Mid-South Conference (MSC) foe Rio Grande University. Cumberlands will play at 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 7th and resume the series on Friday, March 8th starting at 12:00 pm.
