WILLIAMSBURG Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Basketball Patriots earned two hard fought victories last week at home against UVA-Wise and then #3 University of Pikeville. UC would then look to carry some momentum on the road this week, which has proven to be a tough place to go this season for any Mid-South Conference (MSC) team.
On Thursday, the Patriots would travel to take on a very talented St. Catharine College team. UC would find themselves in an early hole as they trailed St. Catharine 44-29 after the first 20 minutes of play. Although the Patriots played much more solid in the 2nd half, it was St. Catharine coming away with a victory by the score of 68-85. Benito Santiago, Jr. (Coamo, Puerto Rico) led UC with 20 points and 7 rebounds on the game. James Archie (Jackson, MS) would add 19 points off the bench.
On Saturday, the Patriots would travel to take on MSC nemesis Georgetown College in a tough MSC matchup. The first half was well in favor of the Tigers as they led by 18 points at the half 40-22. The Patriots played much better defensively in the 2nd half, but it still wasn’t enough as UC fell to the Tigers 70-49. UC was led in the game by Steve Goins (Chicago, IL) with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Santiago, Jr. pitched in 11 points and 4 rebounds. UC only shot 27% from the floor in the game while the Tigers shot 52% on the night.
The Patriots will return home next week as they host NAIA #4 Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday and Campbellsville University on Saturday.
