Patriots make historical climb to No. 1 in NAIA football Coaches Poll

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football program is in the midst of a historical season as they look to complete just their 2nd perfect season this weekend at Bluefield College. With a 9-0 overall record and 5-0 in Mid-South Conference play, the Patriots are on the cusp of history, but already rewrote the record books today as the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll was released.

The Patriots are now ranked the #1 team in the NAIA for the first time in school history. This is a monumental ranking for UC as they are coming off their 2nd shutout in the Coach John Bland era last weekend with a 38-0 victory over Kentucky Christian University on Senior Day in Williamsburg. The Patriots were as efficient as ever this weekend with 380 yards of total offense including 338 on the ground. The Patriots averaged 6.4 yards per play in this weekend’s win as they held a KCU offense to just 117 yards of total offense.

This season has been a special one to remember as the Patriots have never been ranked below 8th in the country (Preseason poll) and no lower than 4th since the first poll of the year. Numerous Patriots have made their mark winning MSC Player of the Week awards as well as being ranked in the top 10 in the NAIA in respective categories. UC is currently ranked #1 in the NAIA in Rushing Offense per Game (350.4 yards) and Total Sacks Against (6). They also ranked in the top 5 in the NAIA in Total Rushing Offense (3,154 yards is 2nd), 3rd Down Conversions (50% is 2nd), Scoring Offense per Game (46.6 points is 4th), Total Offensive Yards per Game (479.4 yards is 5th), and Total Scoring Offense (419 points in 5th).

Head Coach John Bland commented, “I am so proud of our team for this accomplishment because it shows their hard work they have put in and is huge for our program. I have said it before though, although this is great, it is where we finish not where we are. We keep working towards that goal.”

The Patriots will continue their pursuit of perfection on Saturday November 16th as they travel to take on Bluefield College. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm.
