WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriots Men’s Soccer team swept past Bluefield College on October 19th. The Patriots took down the Rams 4-1 in the Mid-South Conference (MSC) contest, moving their season record to 6-5-1 and 6-1 in MSC play, keeping UC in 2nd place in the MSC standings.
Scoring for the Patriots began early in the match with freshman Matt Worley (Knoxville, TN) finding the net off of a beautiful pass from Pedro Antonelli (Mairipord, Brazil). Antonelli also had the assist on the second goal when sophomore Ariel Castanon (Chile) fired and placed another goal on the board for the Patriots. Rob Jones (London, England) scored the third goal for UC off a penalty kick, bringing the lead to 3-0 before the half.
After an exciting first 45 minutes of play, the Patriots looked to continue with tough defense and offense to shut down the Rams from placing any goals on the board. Unfortunately in the 72nd minute, Bluefield’s James Gunn found the net and scored the lone goal for the Rams. Joao Ehlers (Sao Paulo, Brazil) answered back just two minutes later when he received a perfect pass from Antonelli to score the final goal for the Patriots. With Bluefield being unable to find the goal, the Patriots took the conference win with a final score of 4-1.
The Patriots look to remain undefeated on their home turf on October 22nd when they take on Brescia University. Kickoff is set to start at 4:00 pm.
