Patriots pull off upset in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo.(WYMT) -- The University of the Cumberlands men’s basketball team capped off a win in the first round of the NAIA Division I tournament, 82-58, over Rocky Mountain (Mont.) Wednesday morning.

"We were a little nervous,” UC head coach Donnie Butcher said. “We were not very settled at all. We were just trying to do way too much. Once you make a few shots, you relax a little bit. But more importantly, we kept defending the whole time. We were horrible offensively but we kept guarding, kept guarding and when you make a few shots, the game comes a little easier for you -- and that's kind of what happened."

Cumberlands shot 48 percent from the field.

"It's just the adrenaline at the beginning of the game. Once that settled in, we were just ready to go,” UC freshman guard Taylor Gover said. “All the guys started clicking, started finding each other -- assist after assist -- the game just felt good. It just got easy for us."

The Patriots (20-11) will play Emmanuel (Ga.) Friday morning at 9 a.m.
