On Friday, February 24th, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) baseball team held their second annual Military Appreciation Day. The event was set aside to honor all former and current members of the armed forces during a doubleheader against the Warriors of Rochester College.
Throwing out the ceremonial first pitch for the Patriots was former military sergeant and current UC senior student Sgt. Derrick Watkins (Loyall, KY).
On hand to sing the National Anthem on this special day was UC student Logan Reynolds (Corbin, KY) and the University of the Cumberlands ROTC, under the direction of Major Simpson, presented the nations colors. Those representing ROTC included Natasha Syndor (Elizabethtown, KY), Tyler Thacker (Ranger, GA), Keddron West (Nashville, GA), and Richard Hutchinson (Douglas, GA).
During the ceremony the Patriots were reminded of the courage and dedication that all current and former armed forces members go through in order to defend their home. The Patriots players' took it to heart and showed a lot of determination to defend their home field in game one as they won 8-7. In game two the Cumberlands fell behind 12-8 going into the last inning with one last chance to make a push for the win. The Patriots battled hard until the end, but the comeback fell short as they lost 12-11.
The Patriots are currently sitting at 7-6 on the season. They will be back in action today when they host #12 Union College with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 pm.
Over the weekend UC will welcome West Virginia Tech to town on Friday, March 2nd, for a four game series. Games on Friday will start at 1:00 pm and games on Saturday are scheduled to start at noon.
