The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Basketball team hosted two Mid-South Conference games this past week after having a ten day break from games. The Patriots took on the NAIA #1 University of Pikeville Thursday and hosted the University of Virginia at Wise Cavaliers on Saturday.
The Patriots had a battle on their hands as they held the #1 Bears to just 21 first half points on Thursday and were tied at the break. Unfortunately, the Bears found their shooting touch in the 2nd half as they piled up 52 2nd half points as they pulled away from the Patriots handing UC its first loss of the season by a score of 57-73.
Senior guard Zavion Neely (Chicago, IL) led the Patriots with 27 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Senior Matt Daniel (Morehead, KY) followed with 12 points and 4 rebounds. The Patriots were held to just 37% shooting from the floor in the game and a meager 11% from three point land. The Patriots were also outrebounded for just the first time this season by the Bears.
On Saturday, the Patriots were eager to bounce back as UVA-Wise came to Williamsburg for their first matchup of the season. The Cavaliers came out strong in the opening minutes as the Patriots trailed by as much as eight points in the first half, and ended the 1st half down three to UVA-Wise 25-28. The Patriots though found their shooting touch in the 2nd half of this game as they racked up 50 points in the 2nd half off of 50% shooting from the field as they rallied back to defeat the Cavaliers 75-62. Senior Zavion Neely led the Patriots on Saturday with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. Seniors Flynn Clayman and Matt Daniel each added 13 points and 2 assists. The Patriots are now 8-1 on the season and 2-1 in the MSC as the first regular season poll for the NAIA is scheduled to be released Monday afternoon
The Patriots will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on Monday, December 5 to take on Carver Bible College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. The Patriots will stay in the Atlanta area on Tuesday as they will take on Life University at 5:00 pm.
