The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Basketball team hosted two Mid-South Conference (MSC) games this past week starting back from the holiday break. The Patriots took on the NAIA #5 Georgetown College Tigers on Thursday and hosted the Shawnee State Bears on Saturday.
The Patriots only trailed the Georgetown Tigers by five points in the first half of the game scoring 30, to their 35. Unfortunately, the Tigers held onto their lead for the remainder of the game. Although, the Patriots came close to a comeback as senior Matt Daniel (Morehead, KY) was fouled after making a three with 17 seconds left on the clock. Daniel making the free-throw afterwards only left the Patriots trailing by only two. Time ran out for the Patriots resulting in a score of 75-73.
Senior guard Zavion Neely (Chicago, IL) led the Patriots with 23 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Senior Matt Daniel followed with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. The Patriots did shoot 48% from the floor in the game, but were held to 25% from three point land. The Patriots and Tigers captured the same number of rebounds (31) during the game.
On Saturday, the Patriots were ready to play after their tough loss on Thursday as Shawnee State University came to town. The Patriots led almost the entire game holding an 8 point lead to end the first half. The Patriots continued playing strong in the second half as they continued to out-score the Bears shooting 96% from the free throw line along with 50% from the 3-point line in the 2nd half en route to a 78-65 win.
Sophomore Steve Goins (Chicago, IL) led the Patriots on Saturday with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Senior teammate Matt Daniel added 16 points, 6 rebounds, an assist, and 3 steals. During this game Daniel also scored his 1,000th career point, becoming just the 16th person in UC history to join this illustrious club. The last member to join the 1,000 point club was Luke Fitzgerald back in 2009.
The Patriots are now 10-6 on the season and 3-3 in the MSC. UC will travel to St. Catherine this coming Thursday with tip-off set for 8:00 p.m. The Patriots will be away on the road again that Saturday as they will take on neighboring Campbellsville University at 4:00 pm.
