BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Point (Ga.) forward Tory Wooley scored a game-high 21 points, leading the Skyhawks to a 78-69 victory over the Union College men’s basketball team in an Appalachian Athletic Conference tilt at Robsion Arena on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 4-17 on the year, 1-6 in the AAC, while Point improved to 5-15, 2-5 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first period, Union held the lead on a few occasions the first couple of minutes, and with 12:40 left in the half, had a 13-10 lead after Josh Smith (Corbin, Ky.) knocked down a pair of free throws. Point, however, went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 18-13 lead with 8:28 left after a Jeremy Mahaffey jumper.
From there, the Skyhawks held the lead the rest of the half, and took their biggest lead of the night right before the half at 33-23. The lead held over the final moments, as Point was up 10 points over Union going into the locker room for intermission.
In the second half, Point came out of the locker room on fire, going on a back-breaking 11-2 run to take a 44-25 just three minutes into the period.
This lead proved to be too much of a deficit for UC to comeback from, but they did not go down without a fight, as they cut the once large Skyhawk lead all the way down to six points (66-60) with 3:29 left after a James Strange (Pineville, Ky.) three-pointer.
Point, however, came back down the floor and nailed a jumper to get the lead back to eight points (68-60) with 2:56 left. The Skyhawks then proceeded to salt the game away at the line down the stretch, eventually recording a nine-point road conference win.
Overall, Josh Hurd (Independence, Ky.) led the Bulldogs in the loss, recording his first double-double of the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Other double-digit scorers for Union included Strange, who had 15 points, and Ian Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J.), who had 11 points. Davis also dished out five assists in a losing effort.
Wooley’s 22 point night paced the Skyhawks, as he led four double-digit scorers on the night for Point.
Union returns to action on Saturday when they host Bryan in an AAC match-up at Robsion Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
