Poythress named SEC freshman of the week

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman Alex Poythress has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after averaging 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against 9th-ranked Duke and to Lafayette.

Poythress had 20 points and added a team-high eight rebounds in a loss to No. 9 Duke. He then topped that performance with a 9-of-10 night from the field for a career-high 22 points in the win over Lafayette. He became the first freshman since Brandon Knight in Feb. 2011 to have consecutive 20-point efforts.

The honor is the first in Poythress’ career and the second for UK this season.

The Wildcats are in action Wednesday night taking on the Morehead State Eagles in Rupp Arena as a part of the Barclay’s Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET and the game will be televised live on FS South and delayed on the UK IMG Sports Network.
