MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State junior right fielder Brandon Rawe has been named to the 2014 Gregg Olson Award Watch List. The list, which includes 80 players nationwide, identifies candidates for college baseball's annual "Breakout Player of the Year."
Rawe, a native of Matthews, N.C., leads the Ohio Valley Conference in hits (87) and doubles (18) while ranking third in batting average (.401). He entered Tuesday's contest at Tennessee needing just one base knock to set the school's single-season record.
Rawe, who has started all 50 games for the Eagles this season, ranks nationally in hits (4th), total bases (7th, 135), batting average (10th) and doubles (24th). The three-hole hitter is batting .439, with eight roundtrippers and 22 RBI, through 27 conference games.
"This recognition is terrific for Brandon and our program," Head Coach Mike McGuire said. "Brandon is having an outstanding season for us. He has become of the top players in our conference and is very deserving of any kind of national recognition he can get."
The award is named after former Auburn pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the nation's top collegiate players after an initial season filled with mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All-American, first-round draft pick and Major League All-Star.
Semifinalists will be named on May 30, while finalists will be tabbed on June 6. The winner will be announced during the annual NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
