Rebounding woes cost Bears in loss at St. Catharine

ST. CATHARINE, Ky. – The St. Catharine Patriots scored the first 11 points and dominated the glass in a 93-64 win over the University of Pikeville on Saturday afternoon.

St. Catharine (18-7 overall, 10-6 in the Mid-South Conference) pulled down 21 of the first 22 rebounds in the game en route to a 55-22 advantage on the glass.

Pikeville saw a three-game win streak come to an end, falling to 8-16 overall, 4-11 in the league.

Reilly Poirier had six points in the 11-0 run, including the basket with 16:32 to play to finish it off. Poirier, a senior from Dennis, Mass., finished the game with 18 points and 17 rebounds, despite missing much of the second half with foul trouble.

Prior to the game, Poirier and Janae Howard were honored for their career in senior ceremonies. St. Catharine will play two more games at home but held the ceremony today because its coach, Lena Bramblett, is due to give birth in the next couple of weeks.

Pikeville had two players in double figures in the loss, getting a career-high 14 from freshman Kayla Day. Sophomore Whitney Belle Jackson finished with 11.

Poirier was followed in scoring by Howard’s 17. Alexiss Griffin came off the bench for 13 points and eight rebounds, while Rianne Hofstraat had 12 and nine while Stacie Shrout tossed in 12 as well.

St. Catharine hit 48.5 percent overall and was 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from the arc. The Patriots also hit 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) from the line.

Pikeville, meanwhile, was only 23-of-58 (39.7 percent) from the field and 4-of-19 from deep. The Bears were 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) from the line.

Pikeville will return to the court on Monday night when it plays host to Kentucky Christian University. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the UPike Gymnasium.
