Record book gets workout Saturday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – It was a Saturday afternoon ordered straight from a catalog both on and off the field for the University of Pikeville football Bears.

Seven records were established, tied or extended in the 51-34 win over Faulkner University to send the Bears to 3-1 on the season heading into the Mid-South Conference East Division opener against Campbellsville University on Saturday at 1:30.

The new or tied marks were:

- Career passing yards. Junior Trevor Hoskins was in the first quarter of only his 14th game when he passed Chip English to become the all-time leader in this category. He enters Saturday’s game with 4,035 yards

- Points in a half. The Bears scored 44 first-half points, edging their total in perhaps the most famous Bears’ game ever, the Oct. 20, 2001 Homecoming win over Lambuth during which the Bears scored 42 second-half points

- First Downs. The Bears had 34 Saturday, six more than they had at Georgetown last season

- Hoskins completed 36 passes, passing the mark he established last year at Faulkner and matched at Lindsey Wilson

- He threw six touchdown passes, matching his mark at Georgetown last season

- Sophomore cornerback Demitri Travis had three of UPIKE’s five interceptions, becoming the third Bears to do so in a game

- And Hoskins extended his record for career touchdown passes to 40 with his half-dozen on Saturday

Other notes of interest:

- The Bears had 606 yards of offense on Saturday, which is only the third most in school history. But since the combination of offensive coordinator Allen Holland Jr. and quarterback Trevor Hoskins have hit campus things have been different – five of the top six days of yardage gained have come in the last 14 games under their helm

- Hoskins’ 481 passing yards, while amazing considering he sat the last half of the fourth quarter, is good for only third on the school’s list. He, of course, holds the two above it

- With his 481 yards on Saturday, Hoskins moved from 10th to fifth in passing yards in a season, and still has six games remaining

- The teams scored all kinds of points and left the punting units on the sideline. The four total punts – two for each team – tied for the second fewest in school history

- While he didn’t match his own records from the Southern Virginia game, freshman placekicker Grayson Quick had some impressive stats. His seven extra-point tries was good for a tie for second in a single game, and his six made matched the third most ever
