Reinhardt Upsets No. 19 Union, Post 66-63 AAC Win

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Visiting Reinhardt (Ga.) made the plays it needed to down the stretch and pulled out the 66-63 upset over No. 19 Union on Tuesday in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
The Lady Eagles (7-8 overall, 2-1 AAC) overcame a 10-point deficit with 11:15 to play to capture the conference win. The loss ends the Lady Bulldogs' win streak at seven games as they fall to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Junior Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) led all scorers with 20 points as she also paced Union with seven rebounds. Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) chipped in 13 points with Kara Pile(Fairdale, Ky.) adding 10.
Union led for much of the game but had trouble putting much distance between it and Reinhardt. The Lady Bulldogs led 30-28 at the break and appeared to take control of the game when Pile drained a 3-pointer and a sank a pair of free throws to put Union up 52-42 with 11:15 to play.

Reinhardt countered with a 13-2 rally, grabbing a 55-54 lead off a pair of Erin Courington free throws at the 6:31 mark. Roberts hit two free throws to send Union up one with under six minutes to play, beginning a see-saw battle for the lead.

With 4:31 to go, Raven Williams' layup gave Reinhardt a 61-58 advantage. Yet, back-to-back buckets by Waters sent Union ahead one with 2:38 remaining.

A Kayla Aiken putback and a Pile free throw knotted the score at 63-63 with 2:05 left on the clock. A Jordan Marsh free throw sent Reinhardt up 64-63 at the 1:19 mark. Union had a couple of chances to reclaim the lead but missed a two shots under the goal.

Kareen Abling connected on two free throws with 6.5 seconds to go, giving the Lady Eagles a 66-63 lead. Union tried to get the ball down the floor for a 3-point attempt, but turned the ball over to end any hope of a comeback.

Reinhardt dominated Union on the glass, outrebounding the host 48-38 with 20 offensive boards. The Lady Bulldogs had only eight offensive rebounds.

Williams lead Reinhardt with 12 points, while Aiken and Abling added 11 and 10, respectively.

Union shots 39.6 percent (19 of 48 shots) from the field, 30.8 percent (4 of 13) from 3-point range and 70 percent from the line (21 of 30). Conversely, Reinhardt hit 36 percent (27 of 75) from the floor and was 4-for-12 from long range. At the line, the Lady Eagles shot 53.3 percent (8 of 15).

Union will travel to Montreat (N.C.) on Thursday to face the No. 13 Lady Cavaliers at 5:30 p.m.
