Rhymer thinks his team will be fine

Cardinals versus Cardinals -- that's what it will be when South Laurel faces Wayne County on Saturday.

South Laurel has a new head coach in Matt Rhymer and he hopes he can turn the program around.

The cardinals won just one game last season.

"Our keys to success, I think, Friday night will be ball control," the first-year coach said. "Hold on to the football, win the line of scrimmage, no stupid penalties, play keep away, um, so to speak, and eat up the clock.

"And when they have the ball, be sound and fundamental on defense, be in our gap assignments, make them go the long hard way and don't give up any big plays."

Wayne is ranked in the top 10 in class 3A.

"In the secondary, no plays behind us with the deep play action pass or the vertical routes, make them go the long hard way," Rhymer said. "If we can do those things and execute and believe in what we are doing, I think we will be fine."
