PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Rio Grande broke open a six-point game in the final 10 minutes to knock off the University of Pikeville 82-65 Thursday night.
Rio Grande (12-5, 3-2 in the Mid-South Conference) took a 48-34 lead to the half but was outscored 16-8 to open the second half. Sophomore Brogan Conley scored eight of her team-high 18 in the stretch to pull the Bears within six, 56-50.
But the Red Storm dominated the final five minutes. A jumper by freshman Nicole Lyons with 5:49 to play pulled UPIKE within nine at 66-57, but the hosts outscored the Bears 16-8 down the stretch, taking advantage of five three-point baskets in the final five minutes for the win.
The Red Storm was 11-of-21 from the arc in the win.
Conley, who also led the Bears with nine rebounds in the loss, was joined in double figures by freshman Whitney Belle Jackson’s 12 points, all of which came before halftime. Freshman Sydney Mason, who was 3-of-4 from the arc, added 11 off the bench.
Rio Grande was paced by senior Kaylee Helton’s 23 points. She also had five assists and three steals in the win. Junior Shardae Morrison-Fountain followed with 20, thanks to 3-of-4 shooting from the arc.
Freshman Noelani Woodson tossed in 12, hitting 4-of-6 from downtown, while sophomore Broke Shaw added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Pikeville, 4-14, 0-7, will remain on the road this weekend to take on WVU Tech Saturday at 2 p.m. Rio Grande will host U.Va.-Wise Saturday.
