Roundball Preview: Jenkins Lady Cavaliers

JENKINS, Ky. (WYMT) -- The Jenkins girls basketball team is coming off a 8-19 season, but as the team told WYMT, they love the chemistry this team has because they all play softball together too.

But the Lady Cavaliers also told us they have much to improve on.

"We need to work harder and trust each other more and play as a team better," junior forward Reanna Elswick said.

"We are very aggressive on defense, very quick,” sophomore guard Whitney Creech said. “We will be able to press teams and push the ball up the court and get some easy baskets."

"They work really hard every single day in practice, and every single day, they are giving it everything they have so I think we are going to have a great season," senior forward Baylee Rose said.

"What they are going to least expect is we are going to have a winning season,” senior point guard Mercedes Boggs said. “We are going to go out there and show people that a small school -- regardless of the size -- can do just as good as anybody else."

Not only do they want to win; they want to win a district championship and go as far as they can in the region.

"It would mean everything,” sophomore forward McKenzie Gibson said. “We have not won the district in a while and I really hope we can win it this year."

“On the positive side, they are good on offense, defense,” senior Tiffany Ramey, who is the manager of the team, said. “They know where somebody is, when they need to be there, when to pass it. Negatively, they need to work on their attitudes and working together more. They get upset and they just need to calm down.”

“This season, (we haven’t focused on conditioning a lot). We usually focus on that a lot,” head coach Ashley Addington said. “This year, we have kind of slacked off and kind of slacked off and done a lot more scrimmaging in practices and I think it's got us in more better shape than it was last year and they are getting up and down the floor a lot better already at this point in the season than we were last year."

Junior guard Brittany Sexton said she simply “loves playing the game (she) loves with this group of girls."
