PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - The Prestonsburg Blackcats finished below .500 last season but took eventual 15th Region champ Johnson Central to the brink in the first round of the regional tournament.
With so many players also playing football it's not always a fast start to the season, but the players know it's all about how you finish and it starts with the 58th District.
"With kids playing multiple sports you're not going to see your best basketball starting off," says James Derossett, who is entering his third season as head coach of the Blackcats. "You got to be patient, and I think I had to learn that because as a football coach you geared for ten games and you want to win every one of them. But it's a long season. There are 30 games and obviously you want to win your conference and the get good seed going into the tournament, but you're not going to win them all."
"We're probably not the most talented team in the region but we strive to be the most hard working team in the region," says junior point guard Jarredd Jarrell, who also starts at quarterback on the football team. "We're just going to try to out work them during the games and just play really good defense."
"Of course we want to win the district but we'll look at the district first. We got beat last year in the finals and we won it the year before that, so hopefully we can knock off the teams and have a good year," says sophomore forward Dalton Frasure. "We want to go 8-0 in the district and just take it from there."
"Hard work and dedication in everything," adds senior Aaron Foley. "Heart mostly."
