Sam Umberg joins Eagle football staff

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Sam Umberg has joined the Morehead State football coaching staff, where he will assist with wide receivers.

Umberg spent the 2013 season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, North Gwinnett High School, in Suwanee, Ga. He coached wide receivers and assisted the offensive coordinator. He was also instrumental in film analysis and developing game plans.

"Sam brings a wealth of spread offense knowledge with him, and he is detail oriented," Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. "His experience at Valdosta State allowed him to assist with drills, scout teams, special teams, academics and recruiting."

Umberg was a student assistant coach at Valdosta State (Ga.) for five seasons. His primary duties were assisting with the offense and monitoring academic performance.

"I am very excited to be at Morehead State," Umberg said. "I have worked in our offensive system for many seasons now, so I am very familiar with the formations and strategies we use here for the most part. There is a great group of receivers returning and an excellent freshmen class to work with."

In his time as a collegiate coach, the Blazers were 41-16 and won the 2012 Division II National Championship. Valdosta State averaged more than 300 total yards per game all five seasons and more than 200 passing yards in four of five seasons.

Umberg coached all-region and First-Team All-Gulf South quarterback Cayden Cochran at Valdosta State. At North Gwinnett, he helped guide Vanderbilt signee Caleb Scott and Missouri signee Nate Brown, who combined for 2,071 yards and 31 touchdowns.

"Sam is a great addition to our staff," Tenyer said "I believe his knowledge and collegiate coaching experience will allow for an easy transition.

Umberg earned his bachelor's degree in history from Valdosta State in 2013.
