MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State seniors-to-be Donte Sawyer and Zach Lewis have been tabbed as Football Championship Subdivision Preseason All-Americans by Beyond Sports College Network. Sawyer is a second-team wide receiver, while Lewis is an honorable-mention quarterback.
Sawyer, a native of Acworth, Ga., finished the 2011 campaign with 60 catches for 904 yards and a school-record 12 touchdowns. He also owns Morehead State’s career record for TD receptions (16).
Sawyer led the Pioneer Football League in touchdown catches, while ranking third in receiving yards (82.2) and fourth in points per contest (6.0). He registered five games of 100-plus receiving yards, including a 183-yard effort on Sept. 17 at Saint Francis (Pa.).
Following his junior season, the 6-foot, 190-pound receiver was named to the All-PFL First Team and All-Commonwealth Collegiate Football Team. Heading into 2012, he is a part of the College Football Performance Awards Watch List for FCS wide receivers.
Lewis, a native of Manchester, Ky., set five MSU standards in 2011, including completions (324), attempts (513) and passing yards (3,585). He also shattered four PFL records during the year.
Lewis led the league in total yards (313.5) and passing yards per game (325.9), while ranking second in touchdown passes (28). He recorded a league-best eight games of 300-plus passing yards.
Following his junior year, the 6-foot, 205-pound signal caller was a PFL Honorable Mention for his athletic achievements and a PFL Honor Roll selection for his academic accomplishments. Entering 2012, he is listed on the CFPA Watch List for FCS quarterbacks.
Lewis has completed 670-of-1,097 attempts for 7,296 yards and 47 touchdowns in 29 career games as an Eagle. He needs just 1,733 passing yards and nine TD tosses to set MSU’s career records.
Morehead State begins regular-season action on Thursday, Aug. 30, when Southern Virginia visits Jayne Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. It will be the first of six home games for the Eagles in 2012.
