BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Union College softball players Abby Sears and Aryssa Puckett swept the Appalachian Athletic Conference’s Softball Weekly awards for the period ending Mar. 18th. Sears captured Pitcher of the Week honors, while Puckett took Player of the Week accolades, the league announced on Monday.
Sears (London, Ky.), a senior, went a perfect 3-0, and did not allow a run in the circle this past week for Union. The Lady Bulldogs went 6-0 on the week, sweeping doubleheaders from Bluefield (Va.), Point (Ga.), and Pikeville (Ky.).
Sears started her week off by throwing a no-hitter on Wednesday at Bluefield, as the Lady Bulldogs posted a 13-0 victory. The no-hitter was just the fifth all-time in program history. She followed that performance up by striking out seven in another shutout win against Point on Friday, giving up just three hits in a 8-0 UC win.
Sears finished the week by collecting a win in relief yesterday in the second game verses Pikeville, throwing two innings of shutout ball, while striking out two.
Meanwhile, Sears was just as dominant at the plate on the week, batting 647, with two home runs and three doubles. She also had six RBI and nine runs scored, as well, and went a perfect 6-for-6 at the dish in the Point doubleheader. For the season, Sears is batting .512, which is the highest average in the AAC.
Puckett (Knoxville, Tenn.), a freshman, earned Player of the Week honors after batting an even .600 on the week, going 10-for-15 with 10 RBI and six runs scored. She also hit the first two home runs of her collegiate career during the week, and added both a double and triple.
Puckett’s signature game of the entire week came in the first game of yesterday’s Pikeville doubleheader, where she recorded six RBI, falling one RBI shy of tying the school record in a game. She also hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth that clinched the 9-0 win for the Lady Bulldogs.
For the year, Puckett is batting .512, which is the sixth highest mark in the entire AAC.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host Tennessee Wesleyan at Union Field in an AAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
