KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Officials at the Mid-South Conference announced its annual awards at the conference tournament being held at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn. UVa-Wise had seven players honored by the league. Four players were named to either first or second team All-Mid-South and four players made the All-Academic squad. Kristina Romualdo was a member of both teams.
Romualdo earned her second All-Mid-South award in as many seasons while also making her second All-Academic Team. A second-team honoree in 2012, Romualdo was a first-team selection this season. To this point, the junior first baseman has hit .329 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. The home run total ties her with former Cavalier Britney Lawson with the most single season home runs in school history. Additionally, her RBI total is the second most by a Cav in any single season.
Megan Dillion, Rachel Hawks, and Christina Ziemba were each named Second Team All-Mid-South.
Dillion has hit eight home runs while knocking in 39 and scoring 30 runs to this point in 2013. A consistent defensive player, Dillion has made just seven errors in 163 chances from her third base position.
Hawks became just the second UVa-Wise player to ever win 20 games in her inaugural season as a Cav. The right hander has posted a 2.35 earned run average in her 191 innings of work. The junior has tossed 19 complete games, four shutouts, and added two saves in the circle.
Ziemba has led the team with a .371 batting average and has lined 65 hits this season. With 65 hits, she becomes the fourth player to ever produce 65 or more hits in a season. Ziemba has scored 39 runs and chipped in 19 RBIs in 2013.
In the classroom, Jessi Clark, Natasha Dean, and Allyssa Zebrowski joined Romualdo on the All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing and must maintain at least a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The recipient must also be in good standing with his or her academic institution.
UVa-Wise will continue its quest for the Mid-South Conference Tournament crown on Monday when the team takes on Georgetown College in an elimination game. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at Domtar Park.
