LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Union linebacker Zach Eagler received the Mid-South Conference West Champions of Character award while five Bulldogs made the All-MSC West Team as honorable mentions and four more landing on the All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday.
Eagler (Florence, Ky.) was selected by the MSC's athletic directors as the football student-athlete Champions of Character recipient. Eagler was selected based on his character-driven and civic leadership within his team, campus and community.
Despite missing two games due to injury, Eagler finished tied as the team's third-leading tackler with 45 total stops. In all, he had 16 solo tackles and two tackles for a loss.
Earning All-MSC West Honorable Mentions were Rob Brown (Daytona, Fla.), Demetrius Hicks (Frankfort, Ky.), Chad Boyington (Stockbridge, Ga.) Isiah Anderson (Boston, Mass.) and Bert Brown (Daytona, Fla.).
Rob Brown, a junior running back, became the fifth player in program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season as he finished with 1,110 yards and 10 touchdowns on 218 carries. He also caught 23 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns. Brown ranked second inn the entire Mid-South Conference in rushing yards and all-purpose yards, ranking seventh and 10th, respectively, in the NAIA. In addition, he set program records for most touchdowns scored in a game (six) and most points scored in a game (38) as well as being the fourth Bulldog to eclipse the 2,000-yard career rushing mark.
Hicks, a senior wide receiver, had his season cut short due to injury as well but finished with 24 receptions for 497 yards and four touchdowns. He ranks 15th in program history with 75 receptions, third in receiving yards (1,729), third in touchdown receptions (16) and second in yards per receptions (22.8).
Boyington, a senior punter and place-kicker, averaged 38.2 yards per punt this season on 46 punts. He pinned the opponents inside their 20 eight times and had four punts of 50 yards or more. Boyington was a perfect 31-for-31 on PATs, including a 10-for-10 performance against Faulkner (Ala.), and connected on seven field goals to end the year with 52 points. Boyington has punted the ball 143 times for 4,964 yards with a career-long punt of 68 yards. He also has 12 punts of 50 yards are longer and has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard-line 28 times. With 20 career field goals and 91 career PATs, he has tallied 151 career points.
Anderson, a junior linebacker, ended the season fifth on the team in tackles with 44 total stops. He recorded 7.5 tackles for a loss of 27 yards and 5.0 quarterback sacks. In addition, Anderson had two interceptions, four pass deflections and a fumble recovery.
Bert Brown, a junior defensive back, tied for third on team in tackles with 45 total stops with 34 solo tackles to his credit. He picked off a team-high three passes and broke up nine other passes. Brown recovered one fumble, returning it 31 yards for a touchdown. Also, he blocked two kicks.
Making the All-Academic Team are Eagler, Darrin Greene (Cherrylog, Ga.), Ryan Moses (Williamsburg, Ky.) and Jon Shipley (Tazewell, Tenn.).
Union finished the season 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the MSC West.
