Soccer, football to raise cancer awareness this weekend

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A pair of events involving three University of Pikeville teams will attempt to raise awareness for cancer issues this weekend.

The football team will play No. 2 Georgetown College on Saturday afternoon, while the soccer teams play host to Cumberland University on Sunday beginning at noon, and both are asking fans to show their support by wearing pink to the contests.

The football team will host the Tigers at 1:30 at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. The team will wear pink socks as part of their effort to raise awareness for those who are battling cancer.

“We hope our fans will support the effort and we’ll see some pink mixed in with the orange and black,” said Allan Holland Jr., the associate head coach and offensive coordinator. “We all hope for a day where events such as this will be unnecessary, but until then, anything we can do to raise awareness is critical.”

On Sunday, the soccer teams will host their “Find the Cure” game. The women will play at noon with the men following at 2 p.m. at Bob Amos Park.

“I am hoping for a lot of community support for this event and we will be asking for donations that will go to a local charity that funds cancer patients in Eastern Kentucky,” said Shane Pulliam, head coach of the men’s soccer team. “All of our players will be announced, and when they walk out on the field we will be announcing the family member or friend that they are playing for that is currently battling or may have lost their battle with cancer.”

The teams will wear T-Shirts in the pregame ceremonies that say, “Find the Cure: We are battling more than each other.”

In addition, at halftime of the men’s game a ceremony will be held to honor the senior members of the club in their final home game.
