BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior guard Amber Taylor had a career night posted her first career double-double in helping No. 24 Union to an 111-83 victory over visiting Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Saturday in the 2012 Union College Classic.
Taylor recorded career highs in scoring and assists with 29 points and 10 dimes, eclisping her previous bests of 20 and seven. She was close to a triple-double as she finished with seven rebounds, one shy of her career high.
The win improved the Lady Bulldogs to 2-0 on the year, while the Lady Eagles are now 1-1.
This game was quite different from Friday's season opener. On Friday, Union shot 4-for-32 from 3-point range, but the Lady Bulldogs regrouped and drained an impressive 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from long range. Union also shot 57.8 percent (37-of-64) from the field.
Early on, Union had issues getting going with Alice Lloyd taking a 12-6 lead with 15:50 left in the first half. Union bounced back and reeled off a 22-6 run during the next five-plus minutes for a 28-18 advantage at the 10:15 mark. The Lady Bulldogs steadily added to their lead, closing the period on a 13-3 surge to take a 56-35 cushion into the break. Sarah Scruggs capped the run with an old-fashioned, three-point play.
In was more of the same as Union maintained at least a 25-point lead the rest of the way. The largest the margin grew was 31 at 109-78 with 1:44 remaining as Union claimed the 28-point victory.
After Taylor, freshman Haley Perkins netted 20 points and had four assists. Senior Lindsey Waters helped out with 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Meanwhile, two others scored nine with two more netting eight.
Ariel Nickell paced Alice Lloyd with 18 points, while Carla McDaniel and Jacquelyn Hickson had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Hayley Smith chipped in 11 points.
Union returns to action on Tuesday when it plays host to WVU-Parkersburg at 6 p.m.
