Tennessee Wesleyan hands union 67-32 AAC defeat

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union women's basketball team suffered yet another setback on Saturday, dropping a 67-32 Appalachian Athletic Conference decision to visiting Tennessee Wesleyan.

The loss drops Union to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in league play, while Tennessee Wesleyan improves to 12-8 overall and 9-2 in the AAC.

Playing its second game in a row without senior Lindsey Waters, Union recorded its lowest point total of the season as it registered its two lowest scoring halves of the season. Union netted 17 in the first half and only 15 in the second.

Offensively, Union struggled throughout the contest, making only 22.6 percent (12-of-53 shots) from the field and 10 percent (2-of-20) from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Tennessee Wesleyan connected on 42.2 percent (19-of-45) from the floor and hit 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from behind the arc. Tennessee Wesleyan also made 71 percent (22-of-31) of its free throws, while Union went 6-for-9 at the charity stripe.

Tennessee Wesleyan led from wire-to-wire and the score was tied only twice at 2-2 and 4-4 early on. The visitors led by as much as 12 in the period, but Amber Taylor hit a jumper just before the half to make it 27-17.

In the second half, Union got the margin down to 29-21 after a Laura Perkins bucket with 18:18 left. However, Tennessee Wesleyan went on an 20-6 stretch to open up a 49-27 cushion at the 9:58 mark. Tennessee Wesleyan continued to pad its lead en route to recording the 67-32 decision.

No Union player scored in double figures as Perkins led the way with nine. Three others knocked in six points apiece.

For Tennessee Wesleyan, Cody Houck registered a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 5-for-10 from long range. Courtney Gobble came off the bench to knock in 16 points, while Heather Gibson helped out with 11.

Tennessee Wesleyan dominated the glass, outrebounding Union 47-27.

Union returns to action Tuesday when it plays host to Reinhardt (Ga.) in conference play. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
