Wise, Va. - Three Cavaliers posted a double-double on “Kids Day” as UVa-Wise posted a 76-61 victory over the visiting Dragons of Virginia University-Lynchburg. The Cavs (5-4) forced 17 turnovers by the Dragons en route to 14 fast break points and 46 points in the paint. Lynchburg (3-6) was limited to 37.7 percent shooting on the day overall while shooting just 30.8 percent from distance.
Javon Moore, 14 points and 11 rebounds, Darius Smith ten points and 11 assists, and James Turner 12 points and 11 rebounds all finished with a double-double as UVa-Wise placed all five starters in double figures for the first time this season. Matt Day, 14 points and Jermaine Wright, 12 points rounded the double figure scoring by the five starters. As a team, the Cavs shot 44.1 percent from the field; on defense, UVa-Wise finished with 11 steals and 15 points off turnovers.
Lynchburg was led by Martin Sheffield who scored 16 points on 5-10 shooting. Christopher Calvan added 12 points in the loss and Jan Zornjan grabbed 11 rebounds for the visitors.
The contest was played before more than 2,000 fans at the Prior Center, most of which were local elementary and middle school students from Wise County. UVa-Wise will return to action in 2013 when the team visits Bluefield College for a Mid-South Conference tilt on January 3rd.
