PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) -- A new era of athletics began Tuesday afternoon at Pike Central High School with three new head coaches getting named.
Keith May, who has taught at Pike Central and had a coaching stint at Belfry Middle School, has taken over the boy’s basketball program.
"Transition wise, it is just going from a middle coaching from a few years to being a head coach at high school because there is a different level -- talent level wise,” May said. “You know, getting your contracts in high school basketball compared to middle school, you just kind of call and they give you a date and you play."
Derrick Newsome landed the head coaching job for girl’s basketball.
Newsome has been an assistant at Betsy Layne for the boy’s team and was the girls head coach at Allen Central two years ago.
"I worked under one of the best coaches in the state of Kentucky in Junior Newsome and that experience is invaluable,” Newsome said, “Just hard work, and preparation and scouting. Who works hardest wins -- that's what I learned from him and that's what I'm going to do."
And finally, Shawn Thacker was introduced as the new head football coach, replacing John Chapman, who is now the top defensive assistant at Perry Central.
"[I’m] coming home -- coming home! I mean that's all I can say,” Thacker, who was an assistant at Pikeville before taking the job. “[I’m a] John’s Creek graduate, I moved back here in 2009. I've wanted this job. The opportunity comes about and you know, mamma calls, it's time to come home."
