Tigers nail free throws, Bears 83-76

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – No. 22 Georgetown finished 26-of-34 from the free throw line and used them to upset No. 7 Pikeville 83-76 Thursday night at David-Reid Alumni Gymnasium.

By way of comparison, Pikeville went 13-of-18 from the stripe.

Georgetown (18-5 overall, 10-5 in the Mid-South Conference) won on a night it turned the ball over 20 times compared to 10 for the Bears.

Pikeville (19-4, 10-4) took its last lead with 3:11 to play when senior guard Trevor Setty nailed two free throws to make it 74-73.

But a basket by freshman Deondre McWhorter with 2:13 to play put the Tigers on top by one and began a 10-2 finish for the home team.

The same thing happened in the first half, when Pikeville led most of the way. With 2:21 left the Bears got a basket by senior Terrance Saintil to push their lead to 35-31.

But the Tigers scored the final five, and a three-point play by senior Garel Craig with two seconds to play gave them a 36-35 lead at the half.

Craig was in many ways the difference in the game, scoring 19 points, pulling down six rebounds and dishing out five assists. Junior Monty Wilson led the Tigers with 20 thanks to 11-of-12 shooting from the line. McWhorter came off the bench for 15.

Senior Jamar Briscoe led all scorers with 26 for the Bears. Setty followed with 20 and added 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Junior Greg Magee came off the bench for 10.

Georgetown was 27-of-55 from the field (49.1 percent) and 3-of-10 from the arc. Pikeville, after hitting 12 of its first 24 shots, finished 30-of-75 (40 percent) and shot 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from the line.

The Bears will remain on the road on Saturday, visiting St. Catharine for a 4 p.m. contest. Georgetown hosts U.Va.-Wise on Saturday.
