Wise, Virginia - Limestone College forced 36 UVa-Wise turnovers en route to a 71-55 non conference victory on Saturday.
The loss was the sixth consecutive loss for the Cavaliers who had started the season 2-0. In the victory, the Saints attempted 75 field goals in comparison to 48 attempts for the Cavs. The shot attempt discrepancy led to 38 Limestone points off of turnovers; in addition the Saints enjoyed an 18 point advantage from the three point line.
The Cavs opened the contest on a 16-5 run over the first nine minutes of the game but, the Saints answered with a 27-12 run to head into the locker room in front 32-28. Limestone used its defense to take the lead by forcing 20 first half turnovers; despite the turnovers, the Cavs remained close due to a 12-40 shooting performance by the Saints in the first half.
Limestone’s run continued into the second half as the Saints built a 20 point lead mid-way through the final stanza. UVa-Wise would make a run to cut the lead to 13 but that was as close as the host could get as Limestone responded with a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach.
The Saints Maria Young led all scorers with 25 points while Kaliegh West, 13 and Stephanie Hayes, 12 also finished in double figures. The Cavs were led by Chelsea Cluesman’s 15 point, 14 rebound performance.
UVa-Wise will return to action on Thursday when the Cavs travel to Columbia, Kentucky to face Mid-South foe Lindsey Wilson for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
