WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football Patriots are on campus and preparing themselves for the 2014 season. With the combination of a new head coach, a highly touted incoming class, and numerous returners coming back, the Patriots are poised for another great run in the NAIA. The 2014 NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 poll has been released and the Patriots once again are catching the eyes of the voters.
UC received 306 total voting points, placing them 4th in the NAIA, the national office announced on Monday. The Patriots are coming off a 13-1 season in 2013, including a runner-up finish in the NAIA National Championship game. The 2013 NAIA National Champions Grand View University received all 15 first place votes and 340 total voting points, making them the unanimous #1 team in the country. Carroll College, who the Patriots knocked out of the NAIA Championship Series semifinals, comes in at #2 with 322 total voting points. Morningside was ranked #3 with 308 total voting points while Baker rounds out the top 5 with 285 total voting points.
Other notable teams in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 poll include St. Francis (Ind.) at #6, Faulkner at #10, Georgetown College at #12, St. Ambrose (Iowa) at #17, Lindsey Wilson at #18, St. Francis (Ill.) at #20, and Cumberland University rounding out the top 25 at #25. Reinhardt University also received votes in the Preseason Top 25 poll.
The Patriots will open up their 2014 campaign on the road in Lebanon, Tennessee where they will take on the #25 ranked Cumberland University Bulldogs in a Mid-South Conference crossover game. Kickoff is set for 2:30 pm eastern standard time.
