The NAIA/NWCA coaches association recognizes the importance of strong academics within the sport of wrestling. The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Wrestling team and their Head Coach Matt Lowers also recognize the importance of the student-athlete.
This can be verified as UC has made the Top 10 list for the highest team GPA’s in the nation. Cumberlands comes in at 10th with an overall team GPA of 3.11.
University of Great Falls has this year’s highest GPA in the nation with a 3.37
In addition, senior Zack Barkett was honored as a NWCA All-Academic NAIA honoree. A business major, Barkett participated in the NAIA National Tournament and maintained a 3.89 GPA to earn the honor.
“I am very proud of our finish,” said Lowers. “Though we are not where we want to be, I feel like we are making strides in the right direction. It is our goal to produce a top ten academic team every season while producing Academic All-Americans. I feel with the group that we have returning along with our stellar recruits we will be moving up closer to the top 5 while producing multiple Academic All-Americans in the near future.”
