The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Basketball team had a very successful first half of the season going 10-1 overall with a 3-0 Mid-South Conference (MSC) record. This has the Patriots ranked #14 in the NAIA and looking to make moves in the polls. Each season, the Patriots schedule a few exhibition games over Christmas break to keep the girls in shape. This year, the Patriots decided to play ball in the Bahamas as they took on two of the Bahamas’ national teams.
On Monday, December 19th, the Patriots hit the floor against the Nassau Angels. The Angels tried to play a fast paced style of basketball, but the Patriots were able to slow that game down and beat the Angels in the post as well as from beyond the arc. UC jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back as they defeated the Angels 79-49.
The Patriots were led by Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, KY) with 22 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Lauren Wombles (London, KY) also chipped in with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. Bahamian native Vernisha Moss (Nassau, Bahamas) had 7 points and 3 rebounds in the game.
“The Angels are a very good team and you can see that they were a bit tired from last night and they are on a down swing from the season,” said Melissa Irvin, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at UC. “Our outside shooting was a little bit better, but their athleticism makes them much better than we are. They have some tremendous players and Coach Swaby does a great job with them. Some of their players are a true talent and we would love to have them join the UC family.”
On Tuesday December 20th, the Patriots took the floor once again as they were set to take on the New Providence Women’s Basketball Association’s (NPWBA) defending league champions the Four J’s Cheetahs. Once again, UC came ready to play and continued to dominate every facet of the game as they defeated the Cheetahs 79-39. Currently, there are no stats available for that game.
The Patriots will be back in the states just before Christmas and will take to the courts on December 29th and 30th at the Cumberland University Classic. On the 29th, UC will take on Trevecca Nazarene University, a foe from earlier in the season who the Patriots defeated 82-64. That game will tipoff at 7:00 pm. On December 30th, the Patriots will go against host school Cumberland University with tip set for 3:00 pm.
